On display are three buildings with a continuous curved floor plan from Pietro Consagra’s “Città Frontale” project, created in 1968 as a work of art. And it is also in Sicily, in Gibellina, that one can see the first of this city’s buildings, the Meeting, conceived and built between 1972 and 1980, which features transparent facades on both sides and, inside, a fluid spatiality that is felt throughout the entire structure no matter where one stands. According to the architect’s intentions, this habitable sculpture was intended to be used as: “a bus station, tourist office, waiting room, café, meeting space, and screening venue.” When it was inaugurated, at night the Meeting was illuminated by a system of colored neon lights that highlighted, even from the outside, the design of its curvilinear, continuous ribbon-like profile.
Next to this building stands a second, larger one: the Gibellina Theater, whose construction began in 1989 and remains unfinished, where, on January 15, 2026, one of the events celebrating Gibellina as the Italian capital of contemporary art was inaugurated. The structure, whose outer shell has been roughly constructed, may be completed according to Consagra’s vision: “Gibellina’s frontal and transparent theater has two auditoriums divided by the stage: through the stage, the spectator sees the other spectators, just as through the frontality of this large object one can see the space beyond. The theater in Gibellina serves as a permanent pedestrian bridge connecting one part of the city to the other.”
An optional feature of Consagra’s design was to make one of the two auditoriums movable.
